 Des fois il ya des gens que l'on rencontre et on sait au premier coup d'oeil qu'on va bien s'entendre. Je me suis faite une amie cette année qui a changée ma vie de tellement de façons différentes. Katherine et Malcolm on déménagés à Norman Wells il y a 6 ans pour venir travailler à l'école. Maintenant parents de 2 adorables enfants ils ont décidés cette année qu'il était temps pour leur vie de prendre un nouveau virage. Katherine a obtenu un emploi à Smithers, CB comme conseillère aux étudiants. Nous nous attendions tous à leur déménagement à la fin de l'année scolaire mais Le poste de Katherine débute plutôt que prévu. Aujourd'hui Katherine est partie. J'étais très triste quand j'ai entendu l'avion prendre son envol au dessus de la ville. Malcolm et les enfants vont suivre dans les prochaines semaines.

Musicienne, mère, photographe, chanteuse, cuisinière; c'est une femme aux talents multiples. Katherine et moi avons fait plusieurs expéditions photo dans la dernière année. Elle n'est pas seulement conseillère au étudiant, j'aime dire qu'elle est aussi ma conseillère personnelle. La voix de la raison, elle a toujours de bons conseils. Elle a une façon de s'exprimer qui assagit n'importe qui. Chaque fois que je vais chez elle, je n'en reviens pas à quel point elle est bonne cuisinière. C'est le genre de personne avec qui on peut être assis sans rien dire et sans malaise, avec qui on peut juste ÊTRE. J'admire Katherine pour sa passion et sa détermination. Je vais énormément m'ennuyer d'elle et Norman Wells ne sera jamais pareil sans elle. Mais je sais qu'on va se revoir parce que je sais qu'on va s'arranger pour que ca arrive.

Sometimes there's just people that you know at first sight that you are gonna get along with them. I made a friend this year who changed my life in so many ways. Katherine and Malcolm moved to Norman Wells 6 years ago to work at the school. Now parents of 2 adorable kids they decided that it was time for their life to take another turn. Katherine got a job as school counselor in Smithers, BC. We were all expecting them to move after the end of the school year but Katherine's contract started earlier than expected. Today, Katherine left on the jet. I was really sad when I heard the plane take off. Malcolm and the kids will be following in the next couple weeks. 

Musician, mom, Photographer, Singer, cook; a woman of many skills. Katherine and I went on photography adventures many times in the last year. She's not only a school counselor i also like to say that she's my personal counselor, voice of reason she always has good advises. She has a way of putting words together that makes everything sound better. Every time I go over to their house I'm always amazed of her cooking skills. She's one of those people that you can be with without having to talk. You can just BE, together. I admire Katherine for her passion and her determination. I will miss her like crazy and Norman Wells will never be the same without her. But I know that I will see her again. Because I know that we will make it happen.

THE BREAKUP

Ce n'est pas une histoire d'amour qui fini mal ici, c'est une histoire redondante qui arrive à chaque année avec le printemps. c'est le temps de l'année où la glace sur le fleuve Mackenzie brise et part avec le courant laissant une eau libre où les morceaux de glace et les troncs d'arbres flottent abondemment. Les immenses blocs de glaces s'empilent sur les rives du fleuves formant des montagnes de glace impressionnantes. 

18 Mai, 20 degrés, la glace sur la rivière brise, on se promène en gougounes et en t-shirt...

19 Mai, -10 degrés, on recoit un pied de neige....

La première photo a été prise le 13 mai, on y voit 3 arbres et le fleuve en arrière plan.

la 2e photo a été prise le 19 mai, on ne voit plus le fleuve qui est bloqué par une montagne de glace et un pied de neige au sol.

this is not a bad ending love story. This is the redondant story that happens every year with the arrival of spring. It's the time of year where the ice on the Mackenzie river breaks and leaves with the currant leaving a free water filled with ice blocks and trees flotting abundantly. The huge blocks of ice pile up on the side of the river forming impressive mountains.  

May 18th, the ice is breaking on the river, 20 degres, we walk around in flipflops and t-shirt

May 19th, -10 degres and one foot of snow...

the second picture was taken may 19th, we can't see the river because it's blocked by a mountain of ice and there one foot of snow by the trees.

all the little birds that are arriving everyday by hundreds have a hard time finding food under the foot of snow. 

May Queen

Il y a des drôles de traditions ici. May queen est définitivement la plus bizarre. Depuis des années, l'association des pompiers volontaires organise cette soirée comme levée de fonds. A l'origine la tradition a commencée parce que le ratio de femme est extrêmement bas en comparaison des hommes. Habituellement les participants sont les nouveaux gars en ville. Ils s'inscrivent sous un nom de reine et s'habillent en femme. Ils doivent défiler devant des juges et devant public. "La" grande gagnantE est nommée reine de l'année et gagne 2 billets allé-retour jusqu'à edmonton (ce qui ici à une valeur d'environ 1500$ par billet). Comme il est si dispendieux d'aller visiter famille et amis, plusieurs mettent beaucoup d'effort dans leur costume. 

there's some weird traditions here but May Queen is definitely the weirdest one. For Years the fire department association has been putting up that event as fundraiser  Originally it started because the ratio of woman is extremely low compared to man. Usually, the participants will be newer guys in town. They register under a fake queen name and dress up as woman. They have to walk in front of judges and public. The winning queen wins 2 return tickets to Edmonton (which up here has a value of $1500 per ticket). Because of the high cost to go see family and friends, a lot of people put a lot of effort in their costume.

Café Soma

 Christina Bartlett,

J'ai déja parlé d'elle dans une publication précédente (The Bartletts). Cuisinière hors pair elle écrit un blog de cuisine depuis plusieurs années et surprend avec ses recettes aussi délicieuses que santé. Elle a récemment ouvert un café à Norman Wells, Le café Soma. Tous les profits vont à la ligue mineure de Hockey par qui elle est employée. Les recettes varient à chaque jour et sont toutes excellentes. Le pain, frais du jour, les fruits et légumes frais en salade et les recettes de dessert sans égal. C'est définitivement un restaurant qui se démarque dans une ville comme Norman Wells où le "fast-food" est dominant. Le seul problème avec la cuisine de Christina c'est que ca devient addictif!

I've talked about Christina in a previous post (The Bartletts). Amazing cook, she's been writing her own cooking blog for years. Surprising everyone with her recipes, healthy and delicious. She recently opened a café in Norman Wells, Soma Café. All the profits go to minor hockey who are hiring her. The recipes are different every day and are always excellent. From the bread, fresh of the day to the fresh vegetables and fruits in the salad to her delicious dessert. It definitely pops out in a town where the fast food dominates the restaurant industry. The only problem with Christina's cooking is that it gets addictive!!

Gâteau au chocolat et Quinoa

Il est surprenant de trouver un repas aussi bon au goût que bon pour la santé à un prix si bas ici.

It's surprising to find a meal that is as good of a taste than healthy for such a low price here.

Les biscottes sont siii bonnes, faites avec un chocolat blanc de bonne qualité, trempé dans un café latté en bonne compagnie...imbattable.

c'est pour ca que j'habites ici.

ENFIN, le printemps est arrivé! il commence à faire plus chaud (pas très chaud mais au moins nous sommes au dessus de zéro). Les bernaches du canada on commencées à arriver. la neige fond et on peut voir un peu d'eau couler le long du fleuve. Je suis aller prendre une marche avec ma colocataire et son chien en fin de semaine, superbe. 

FINALLY, spring is here. it's starting to get warmer (not hot but at least we are over 0 degree). The 

canadian geese are starting to fly in. the snow is melting and we can see a little bit of water on the side of the mackenzie. I went for  walk with my roomate and her dog this weekend, it was splendid.

Il y avait un beau mélange de Canada et d'outardes, je ne pourrais dire quels espèces de canard, nous étions plutôt loin et c'étais difficile de voir.

There was a nice mix of geese and ducks. I can't tell what kind of ducks though, we were pretty far and it was hard to see.

près de chez nous il y a une maison abandonnée qui a passé au feu il y a plusieurs années, on peut y retrouver plusieurs objets intéressants comme une vieiile machine à laver avec une presse, une vieiile machine a coudre singer à pédale, etc.
