Les amis

Ici les gens arrivent et repartent sans arrêt. Norman Wells est en rotation continuelle. C'est chouette parce que ca donne l'occasion de rencontrer pleins de gens qui viennent de partout et qui ont des expériences de vie des plus différentes. Le désavantage c'est que quand on se fait des nouveaux amis on ne sait jamais quand ils vont partir, combien de temps ils vont être ici, etc. et c'est difficile à chaque fois qu'on perd un ami. Ma bonne amie Katherine Brach qui était à Norman Wells depuis 6 ou 7 ans est partie l'an passé. Ca a fait un gros vide dans ma vie. Nous allions souvent faire de la photo ensemble et souper et boire du thé. Maintenant je n'ai plus personne avec qui allé prendre des photos des aurores. alors je n'y vais plus. 

Beaucoup de nouveaux sont arrivés à Norman Wells cette année. Parmi ceux-ci, Rachel Thorne. Elle est en charge de la maison des jeunes et est aussi suppléante à l'école. Enjouée, toujours de bonne humeur et motivée, passer du temps avec elle est toujours agréable. Elle m'a demandé de prendre des photos d'elle pour un article qu'elle doit écrire. Qu'y a-t-il de mieux que quelqu'un qui se porte volontaire pour être modèle!!!

Here people come and go all the time. Norman wells is a continuous transient town. It's nice in a way because you get to meet so many different people that come from all over and that have the oddest life experience. The bad thing is that you make new friends and you never know for how long they are going to be here and when they are going to leave. It's hard every time a friend leaves. My good friend Katherine Brach lived in Norman Wells with her family for 6 or 7 years and left last year. It left a big blank in my life. we use to go take pictures together all the time and have dinner and drink tea. Now I have no one to go take pictures of the northern lights with so I just don't go anymore. 

There's a lot of new people that moved to Norman Wells this year. Part of them is Rachel Thorne. She is the new Youth and Elder Coordinator and she also subs at the school. Always happy, in a good mood and motivated, it's always nice to spend time with her. She asked me to take pictures of her for an article that she has to write. What's better than a volunteer model!! 

My work in the North

Depuis Janvier 2013 je travaille dans une petite bibliothèque dans une petite ville (Norman Wells) dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest. Norman Wells est situé à 1,17° du cercle polaire. Les hivers sont rudes et froid atteignant parfois les -50°. Aujourd'hui le soleil s'est levé à 10:20 et s'est couché à 16:07. La bibliothèque est située au coeur de l'école  qui est une école mixte primaire et secondaire. La bibliothèque est utilisée comme classe par l'école durant la journée et est ouverte au public en soirée. 

Sur l'heure du midi je suis en charge d'un petit groupe d'enfants. Chaque jour je leur lis au moins un livre. sinon ils font du coloriage, du bricolage, jouent avec les marionettes, écrivent des histoires ou des bande dessinées. La semaine passé nous avons fabriqué des "props" pour prendre des photos. 2 jours plus tard j'ai amené ma caméra à l'école et ils ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à se faire prendre en photo. 

Ce qui est bien avec les enfants c'est que c'est facile de les rendre heureux. Ils ne sont pas bourrés d'attentes comme les adultes donc difficilement déçus. Ils adorent quand les adultes font les fou et sont émerveillés au moindre détail.

Since January 2013 I've been working in a small library in a small town (Norman Wells) in the North West Territories. Norman Wells is 1,17° south of the arctique cercle. Winters are rough and cold and sometimes it gets down to -50°. Today the sun got up at 10:20 and went down at 4:07. The library is in the middle of the school (mixed elementary and high school). It's used as a classroom during the day and is open for public in the evenings. 

On lunch time I'm in charge of a little group of kids. Every day I read them at least one book. Otherwise, they color, make crafts, play puppets, write stories or comic books. Last week we made photobooth props. 2 days later I brought my camera to school and they had a blast getting their picture taken. 

What's great about working with kids is that it's easy to make them happy. They are not full of expectations like adults which are easily disappointed. They love when adults play fools with them and they are amazed at the smallest little thing.

Rachel's wedding- THE REMAKE

Bon, je ne suis jamais allée à un marriage de toute ma vie. je le sais, tous le monde trouve que c'est débile mais bon. Je n'ai juste pas eu l'occasion encore. Mon amie Rachel s'est marié le 22 juin 2013 à Revelstoke. J'ai reçue mon invitation pour le marriage et j'étais VRAIMENT très excitée de pouvoir y assister. Je ne sais pas si vous vous souvenez mais le 22 juin est aussi le moment dans l'histoire ou mère nature a décidée d'inonder Calgary. Bref, la route vers Revelstoke était fermée et je n'ai jamais réussi à me rendre au marriage. Beaucoup de gens n'ont pas pus se rendre à leur marriage malheureusement. La cérémonie à quand même eu lieu et ils se sont mariés, heureux. 

Mi-September 2013 ils ont décidés de faire un "re-make" pour tous les gens qui n'avaient pas eu la chance de se rendre au marriage, à Calgary cette fois. Pure hasard, le 13 septembre je prenais un vol vers Edmonton pour retourner dans le nord. Bel adon.  J'y suis allé et j'ai eu la chance de voir ma belle amie Rachel dans sa belle grande robe blanche.

So I've never been to a wedding in my whole life. I know everyone thinks it's crazy but hey, it just never happened. My friend Rachel got married on June 22nd 2013 in Revelstoke. I was SO excited when I got my invitation in the mail. I don't know if you remember but June 22nd is also when mother  nature decided to flood Calgary and the road to Revelstoke. So I never made it to the wedding, me and a lot of Rachel's friends and family. The ceremony still happened and they happily got married. 

Mid-September they decided to have a re-make for all the people that couldn't go to the original wedding, in Calgary this time. Randomly, I was flying to Edmonton on september 13th heading back north. Sweet. I got a chance to see my lovely friend Rachel in her beautiful big white dress.

Rachel is a smart, beautiful, passionate, intelligent and funny person. I met her in Norman Wells, Northwest territories, lived and worked with her for a summer. I fell under her charm. I love you my friend. All the best with your husband. xxxx
