Kaebri Ziolkowski

Ca me rend dingue.

Every time I go Home (what we call south up here) I'm chocked when I see how people don't know anything about their own country. This week my sister posted on the internet this video on the election in Quebec showing how people are ignorant about what's happening around them. Most of the people in Quebec can say that they've been to at least 2 other countries but they can't even say how many provinces or territories there is in Canada. It drives me crazy. The perception that people have about the north is amazing. I often get asked what I eat up here, thinking that I eat wild meat and potatoes only or something like that. I don't know. Tonight I had for dinner lemon, olive and ship orzo with homemade spinach pesto.

It is true that reality is different up here. Last night per example my dog Romeo ran away from the house. I wasn't scared that he was gonna get hit by a car I was scared that he was gonna get attacked by a wolf (there's one around town lately).

I often hear "Oh my god it must be so boring up there, there's nothing, nothing to do" yeah, well, for easter I'm going ice fishing in the middle of nowhere and we're gonna go snowshoeing. how are we getting there? yeah on a twin-otter on skis...and you? what are you doing for easter? ...cause here there's nothing to do...it's boring.

It's crazy how some people inspire you to trust them right away. It was the case with Ian Brown. il came to Norman Wells last summer (he lives in Fort Good hope) and was doing a canoe trip on the Mackenzie from norman Wells to Good hope. I was working for canoe north at the time who was providing him canoe and equipment. In December he sent me a message on facebook asking if he could stay at my house for a couple days on his way down to his parents house for christmas. Since than, he's became friend with all of my friends and comes to visit once in a while.

p.s. Ian is a really funny guy, check out his video on sustainable heating:

L'autre soir mon amie Jackie me dit "aye on devrait aller faire du traineau!"

The other night my friend jackie says to me "Hey! we should go sliding!"
Krista, Angela, Jackie and I went up to the ski cabin where we did a couple tobogan rides and Jackie lit up a nice bonfire. Beautiful night under the moon light.

Mark Moriarity

I work in a bar. One night while I was at work this guy walks in with a couple of my friends. somehow we get to the topic of photography. At this point the guy had a couple beers in him and didn't know yet that I also do some photography in my free time. He decided that he would explain to me how to take pictures of northern lights. After a little while I showed him some pictures I took. He stopped explaining. As always in Norman Wells, all the best ones always have to leave. It didn't take to long that Mark was transfered to Yellowknife. This week I got a message from him saying that he would be in Norman Wells for a couple days so we went out tonight to capture the lights.  Even thought the thermometer was showing under -30 and I couldn't feel my toes anymore, I had a great time in great company and got great pictures.

turn the lights down low

Last year I went to take a billion pictures of the northern lights with my friend Katherine. When she moved last year I lost my photography partner. This year I've neglected. I look at the northern lights from my bedroom window but I don't have the courage to go out by myself. A few days ago my friend JP told me he'd come with me when the sky would clear. A few weeks ago my friend Rachel told me she'd come with me next time i'd go take pictures. Well last night I took them seriously and when I saw the lights I called them. The good friends are the one that will stand up next to you for an hour at -25 while you are taking a million pictures without complaining. Thanks Jean- Paul and Rachel, you made my night last night!

Every year my parents have a bonfire in the backyard for new year. We had a great night for 2013 with our neibourghs Chris and Louise, even the stars were there.

There was a big ice storm in the eastern townships, my parents house was in the middle of it. Today I went for a wal in the forest with my mom. The beauty of the light reflecting on the trees covered with ice was breathtaking.
